NEW YORK— Kate Lanphear has been named the new creative director of Marie Claire; succeeding Nina Garcia. Last month, DM Fashion Book reported that Garica left Marie Claire to take the top masthead at Elle, replacing Robbie Myers (see it here).

Both Lanphear and Garcia are alums of Elle, having worked under Myers at the title as style director and creative director respectively.

Marie Claire‘s editor-in-chief, Anne Fulenwider announced the hire at the glossy’s second annual “Power Trip” in San Francisco.

Lanphear most recently has done various consulting and contributing roles at Google and The Editorialist. At Google, she helped launch experiential initiatives on their search platform for fashion weeks, signing over 60 luxury brands for the first season. Previously, she was the style director at The New York Times T magazine, and editor-in-chief at Maxim.

Kate is one of the most creative, stylish, sought after talents in fashion today,” said Fulenwider. “She brings with her invaluable expertise and relationships in the fashion and tech community that align perfectly with the vision of Marie Claire. Her discerning eye for smart style will help us continue to create extraordinary content for our readers.”

Lanphear will be responsible for expanding Marie Claire’s fashion footprint across platforms and will continue to define the brand’s style. She will oversee the magazine’s fashion shoots and creative design of the fashion pages.

Joining Marie Claire feels like the perfect homecoming to editorial,” said Lanphear in a press statement. “The DNA of the brand resonates deeply with me and what I believe in. It is an exciting intersection of the worlds that I love – fashion – with technology, social consciousness and empowerment of women. I can’t wait to get started and work with Anne and her incredibly talented team.”
