For their Spring 2017 offering, Gypsy Sport presented their runway show at P4 330 Hudson Street in Manhattan during New York Fashion Week: Men’s.

Cali-born Rio Uribe founded the label in 2012; he won the 2015 CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund. Uribe grew up in Los Angeles‘s Koreatown neighborhood. He is not your typical fashion designer. He does not come from a wealthy family, nor is he the graduate of a prestigious design school. Now we have a better understanding on why his designs don’t look like anyone else’s.

He started Gypsy Sport to make something that was more inclusive and more accepting of people who are different sizes, different colors, different religions, races, whatever it is.”

I came up with the name Gypsy Sport because I knew I wanted to have the wordsportin it, I thought it was a cool, generic word that felt very ’90s to me, andgypsybecause I wanted a global word that represented subculture, an outsider for outsiders. The logo is two baseball hats floating on top of each other, which looks like Saturn. We call it a ‘haturn,'” says Uribe.

Prior to launching his brand, Uribe worked at Balenciaga.

Though officially dubbed unisex, his clothes — even the skirts and the dresses — have a distinct masculine tone, fusing streetwear silhouettes and motifs with unexpected and luxurious elements. At his Spring 2017 show, the collection featured soccer jerseys embellished with tassels and lace paneling and contrasted with playful floral Japanese cartoon prints. The collection also featured a piece of West African indigo fabric, mesh jerseys, sheer chiffon in elongated tunics, track suits, baggy basketball shorts, tee-shirt dresses, slips, leggings, muscle tees and cropped workwear trousers.

The cast featured some people from Instagram, Grindr, among others.
