Serena Williams Just Won Her 7th Wimbledon Championship1

Serena Williams has come a long way from the rough streets of Compton. Today Saturday (July 9), the 34-year-old California-native won her 7th Wimbledon championship. Celebs in attendance included Beyonce & Jay Z, Vera Wang, Ellen Degeneres and Uzo Aduba.

The Wimbledon finals match ended with Williams earning every point of her 7-5, 6-3 win on center court at London‘s All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club.

She defeated Angelique Kerber of Germany, the woman who beat her out for the 2016 Australian Open championship this past January.

The international tennis star also just won her 22nd major singles title, tying Steffi Graf for the most Grand Slam titles in tennis history.

Prior to today’s tennis match, Williams recited Maya Angelou‘s “Still I Rise“. This was perfect because it’s no secret that her road from Compton to becoming an international tennis champion wasn’t easy. The tennis world hasn’t always embraced her. Is it because she’s a Black female from one of the roughest ghettos in America?
