Diane von Furstenberg

Iconic Belgian born American fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg has always been a superstar in my eyes. She paved the way for a lot of fashion designers in the industry.

The renowned fashion designer held her sixth annual DVF Awards last week. Hillary Clinton, Naomi Campbell, Tina Brown (she co-hosted the event), Maggie Gyllenhaal, and Gloria Steinem were in attendance.

The honorees at the United Nations event, which celebrated the awe-inspiring achievements of women “who have had the courage to fight, the power to survive, and the leadership to inspire,” included Melanne Verveer, the first-ever ambassador-at-large for women’s issues at the Department of State; former U.S. Representative Gabby Giffords; founder of Women in Business Adi Tafuna’i; and Samar Minallah Khan, a Pakistani Pashtun documentary filmmaker, journalist, and human rights activist. “I am so privileged to know them and to shed light on their important accomplishments,” Von Furstenberg tells Style.com.

Prior to the event, Style.com sat down with DVF to talk about Hillary Clinton, what “feminism” really means today, and more. Below are some excerpts:

Hillary Clinton, who has been a big force at the DVF Awards, just officially announced her campaign. What issues would you most like to see her focus on and change?

Obviously the tendency is to count on Hillary for women’s issues and to fight for women, to fight for equal pay and family leave and all of these things, but the world is in such a state right now that we must look to her for clarity and leadership in all things.

The fashion crowd seems quite dedicated to Team Hillary. Why is that, do you think?

I think Hillary is a compassionate, intelligent, strong, and powerful woman, and I am so glad she is running for president.

The word feminism has been tossed around a lot lately, especially in pop culture. What does the word mean to you?

Feminism is the art of empowering women. When you empower a woman, you change the world.
