This past weekend, the film, From the Rough arrived at select theaters.

Starring Academy Award nominees Taraji P. Henson and Michael Clarke Duncan and Tom Felton, is the inspirational true story of Catana Starks from historically black university Tennessee State, who became the first African-American woman ever to coach an all-men’s team at the collegiate level. Through grit and determination, she overcame incredible odds and deep-seated prejudice from all corners to guide a rag-tag group of golfers to an all-time record championship season“.

Last week, I had the opportunity to interview actor Henry Simmons who plays Kendrick Paulsen Jr. in the film. His career continues to evolve with exciting and challenging projects. Simmons is mostly known for playing Detective Baldwin Jones on the ABC police drama, NYPD Blue, from 2000-2005. He recently starred opposite Robin Williams in the Bobcat Goldthwait independent feature World’s Greatest Dad, Ravenswood, Pretty Little Lairs and No Good Deed.

In From the Rough, Simmons character is an athletic director at Tennessee State University. In our phoner, Simmons and I chatted about the film, how was it playing a role that’s based on a true story, preparing for the role, inspiring young Black athletes, overcoming adversity, and working with Taraji P Henson and Michael Clarke Duncan.
