Most artists in the music industry do not own their publishing. Luckily Bad Boy newly signed rapper French Montana is one of the few artists who own his publishing and he is also the first artist in the history of Bad Boy Entertainment to keep his entire publishing. In a recent interview with Real Talk, the Bronx native said he had his bases covered when it came to negotiating his contract.

“I find it kind of weird; how can somebody jerk you and they give you the paperwork for your lawyer to see,” said Montana. “It’s not like they tricking you. It’s not like them words get up in the middle of the night and change on the contract. You just gotta get the best lawyers. Of course Puff going to have the best lawyers. So you need to get the best lawyers and make sure it works for you.”

“I think I’m the first person, and I ain’t tell this to nobody, only y’all, I’m the first person in the whole history of Bad Boy not to sign my publishing to Bad Boy or Puff,” added Montana. “Ya know, everything I asked for Puff kept his word.”

I think this was a smart move on the behalf of Montana and I truly believe he will do good over at Diddy’s label. Watch Montana’s interview below:
