For the October 2016 issue, Nyong’o was photographed by Mario Testino, and styled by Tonne Goodman.
She wears a Roberto Cavalli dress, Chole dress, Christian Louboutin sandals, 3.1 Phillip Lim dress, Duro Olowu silk coat and skirt, Cult Gaia turban, Akris dress and cuffs, Kiki clothing handkerchief-hem dress, Missoni dress, Valentino dress and cuffs, Antonio Marras dress, Giuseppe Zanotti sandals, Prada dress, Givenchy by Riccardo Tisci dress, Chanel dress and more.
The shoot took place at various locations in Kisuma County, in Lupita’s hometown of Kenya: Duga Beach, Kit Mikayi and Ratta Mixed Secondary school.
Inside, Nyong’o talks about her upcoming movie, Queen of Katwe, “To play a mother of four in Uganda, a formidable mother who has so much working against her, was so compelling to me. It wasn’t something I thought I’d be asked to do”. “The fact that it was based on a true story, an uplifting story out of Africa. . . .”. She also talks about being a dark woman, “Alek Wek [model] changed how dark people saw themselves. That I could do the same in a way for somebody somewhere is amazing.” Finally, she speaks about wanting to create opportunities for people of color. “I want to create opportunities for other people of color because I’m fortunate enough to have a platform to do that. That is why Eclipsed and even Queen of Katwe are so important, to change the narrative, offer a new lens on African identity.”
