Ben Simmons May Sign A Sneaker Deal With Either adidas Or Nike
Is this Ben Simmons season? He’s currently winning!
donbleek.com previously reported that the Australian basketball player was covering the latest issue of Slam magazine (see it here).
The 6-10 and 250 pounds basketball player been touted as a possible first overall pick in the 2016 NBA Draft.
Now, we’re hearing that the former LSU Tigers recently met with adidas and Nike and a decision is coming soon. Simmons “is looking to sign a shoe endorsement deal before the NBA draft lottery on May 17 because he doesn’t want to be at a negotiating disadvantage should small-market teams land the top two selections in the draft,” according to Yahoo Sports.
“Nike and adidas are willing to sign Simmons before the draft because they, along with Simmons and his representation, agent Rich Paul of Klutch Sports, feel he can break through no matter the market size of his future team.”
“Adidas met with Simmons on May 5 at Universal Studios in Los Angeles. While many in the industry and at adidas thought the Klutch Sports team was simply using the brand for leverage, sources told The Vertical that perspective shifted before the meeting. Initially, the brand was expecting Paul, Simmons and Simmons’ half-sister Emily Bush, a Klutch Sports marketing employee for the last two years. But the group that attended the meeting grew from three to nine, including Simmons‘ parents, conveying an added level of interest.”
“Nike hosted Simmons on Monday in Portland. It showcased its 93 percent footwear market share dominance in the sport and innovation in the industry. The brand also pitched Simmons’ camp on its track record of creating icons in the basketball world.”
“Neither brand is offering a signature shoe, but there’s a strong distinction in how each company will utilize Simmons. At Nike, Simmons would likely help to elevate the LeBron umbrella of products by wearing models from James’ Team Soldier shoe line. It would be a familiar relationship because Klutch Sports also represents James.”
“At adidas, Simmons would help to lead its statement-level team “Crazy” products, featuring a custom logo and his franchise’s colors.”
“The offers from both brands are “measured,” sources told The Vertical, with additional triggers based on Simmons’ on-court performance. After his up-and-down lone year at LSU, the brands reduced the base money and incentivized the structure of their offers.”
“The brands are offering five-year terms in line with the $2.1 million base pay Andrew Wiggins received in 2014, but below John Wall’s $3.5 million base pay in 2010.”
“Nike is offering a five-year package worth $7.5 million total, sources told The Vertical. The adidas offer is worth $10 million over five years, sources said. Simmons could also earn more with adidas via various bonus incentives, including winning Rookie of the Year and playing in the All-Star game.“
Simmons‘ share the same agent as LeBron James: James‘ longtime friend and business partner, Rich Paul, which makes me believe that he will fall under the Nike umbrella.
